SUMMARY:Od Songs with Phil Owen
DESCRIPTION:Join a unique workshop with the singer and artist Phil Owen. \nAbout a century ago\, a group of folklorists travelled through the English countryside\, collecting old folk songs from some of the last remaining people who remembered them. Many hundreds of songs were collected in Somerset and Dorset\, including in the Cokers. \nIn a workshop on Saturday 11 April\, we will learn a selection of songs from in and around East and West Coker\, and find out about the people who sang them. We will also discuss what it might mean to sing the songs today\, as a way of engaging in local community heritage. \nPhil Owen is a singer and writer from North Somerset. His work is informed by a strong interest in the relationships between voice\, heritage and place. With Megan Wakefield\, he ran the experimental literary salon Tertulia. \nContinuing our relationship with Phil Owen as an artist\, this workshop follows a recent performance at Coker Court\, and Phil’s outdoor performances of O is this called Lord Bateman’s castle\, and is his Lordship here within?\, throughout the Cokers for Od Arts Festival 2018. \nAll singers welcome. The workshop is also open to non-singers who would like to find out more about the songs. \nTime: Saturday 11 April\, 2-4.30pm \nPlace: OSR Projects\, Church Street\, West Coker\, Somerset\, BA22 9BD \nCost: Free but ticketed via Eventbrite \nAccess: the venue is wheelchair accessible\, with an accessible toilet. Please contact us if you have other access requirements. \nFree but ticketed. Spaces are limited\, so we advise early booking. Book your place via Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Solitary Encounters
DESCRIPTION:BOOK TICKETS \nOSR Projects presents: \nA day of presentations\, conversations and provocations for artists and creative thinkers exploring aloneness through geography\, technology and disability. \nOSR Projects are excited to announce a one-day seminar\, Solitary Encounters taking place on Friday 13 March. This event will bring artists\, curators and cultural producers together in rural Somerset to consider the ideas\, politics and experiences of solitude\, loneliness and isolation through artistic practice. \nAs part of the Od Arts Festival 2020 – Alone with Everybody\, this seminar is relevant to all creative practitioners with an interest in the opportunities as well as the challenges of being alone in the world. As well as presentations by inspiring speakers this event is a chance to meet future collaborators\, share food and explore new perspectives through creative interventions and conversations. \nSolitary Encounters features a programme of invited speakers and provocateurs including artists who are exploring different notions of aloneness: \n\nFor his latest artwork Seeing I 2020\, artist Mark Farid will wear a virtual reality headset\, experiencing life through the eyes and ears of one person; hearing only what they hear and seeing only what they see for two weeks.\nTen years ago abstract painter Angela Charles was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa and following two years of dramatic deterioration her work has evolved into a material-led practice\, and she is now coming out as a blind painter.\nBased on Burra Isle in the farthest north easterly corner of the United Kingdom Gaada offer meaningful and critical art activities for the diverse communities of Shetland from their visual art workshop in a converted methodist church.\n\n  \n  \n  \nSolitary Encounters is part of Od Arts Festival 2020 – Alone with Everybody (15-17 May) organised by OSR Projects and supported by Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Common Salt
DESCRIPTION:Common Salt is a performance around a table – a ‘show and tell’. \nIt explores the colonial\, geographical history of England and India taking an expansive and emotional time-travel\, from the first Enclosure Act and the start of the East India Company in the 1600s\, to 21st century narratives of trade\, race and culture. Sue and Sheila activate insights into our shared past\, laying out a ‘home museum’ of objects and stories; of the Great Hedge of India\, of borders\, and collections – all accompanied by original Shruti box laments. \nCommon Salt is a reckoning; the interconnectedness between history and global power\, artefact and trade\, race and memory is hidden in plain sight. \nSATURDAY 1st FEB 2020 – 3pm & 7pm \nWe seat up to 25 people around the table for each performance\, so please book in advance.\nBOOK TICKETS HERE \nor call 07967 756 356/01935 862 201\n£5 / £3 Concessions – Students
